About Thattekad Kerala Western Ghats Birding Tour

Thattekad is a birding paradise in Kerala. It is a habitat of over 100 bird species residents and Pale Arctic Migrants. Thattekad is situated near Kothamangalam and comprises an area of 25km containing lush green forests. Birds seen are Drongo Cuckoo, Malabar Lark, Indian Pitta, White Bellied Treepie, Nilgiri wood Pigeon, Sri Lankan Frogmouth, Green Imperial Pigeon, Loten’s Sunbird, Pompadour Green Pigeon, Vernal Hanging Parrot, Malabar Barbet, White Cheeked Barbet, Blue Bearded Beeater, Large Billed Leaf Warbler, Dollar Bird, Malabar Parakeet, Forest Wagtail, Oriental Darter, Chestnut Shouldered Bush Sparrow, Yellow-browed Bulbuls, Ceylon Frogmouth Blue Kingfisher, Brown Backed Needle tail, Great Eared Nightjar, Indian Cuckoo, Pacific Swallow, Grey Fronted Green Pigeon, White Breasted Woodpecker, Collared Scops Owl, Emerald Dove, Large Hawk Cuckoo, Indian Hawk Cuckoo, Jerdon’s Baza, Heart Spotted Woodpecker, Little Pratincole, Little Spider Hunter, Jungle Myna, White Rumped Needletail, and Malabar Parakeet, Gull Billed Tern, Osprey, among many others. The beautiful landscape is home to leopards, wild elephants, and many other mammals.

Standard Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Kochi – Transfer to Thattekad – Birding Session

Travellers will be picked up from Cochin International Airport and driven 67 km to Thattekad, through beautiful forests and grasslands. Once we arrive, we’ll check into our lodge and take some time to freshen up. Our first birding session of the day will begin, led by an expert guide, where we’ll be introduced to exciting avian species in Thattekad. We’ll take breaks for meals, but birding will continue until late in the evening.

Day 2: Birding Sessions

On the second day of our tour, we’ll spend the entire day searching for more local bird species in Thattekad. We’ll have the chance to see many mammals and other interesting creatures as well. We’ll take a break for lunch and then continue our birding sessions until late in the evening. All meals will be served at the resort at appropriate times, and we’ll enjoy a restful sleep after a late dinner.

Day 3: Drive to Munnar – Birding at Eravikulam National Park

On day three, we’ll drive to Munnar, a stunningly beautiful area known for its panoramic views. Once we arrive, we’ll go birding at Eravikulam National Park. During this session, we’ll focus on finding the Painted Bush Quail and Nilgiri Thrush. After a long day of birding, we’ll relax at the resort and enjoy a sumptuous dinner.

Day 4: Early Morning Birding – Check out from Lodge – Return Journey

On the final day of the tour, we’ll have one last birding session in the early morning. After that, we’ll check out from the lodge and begin our journey back. We’ll provide transportation to Cochin International Airport for all travellers. The tour concludes with memories of exciting finds and photographs.
