About the Pench Tiger Reserve :

The land of Mowgli, Pench National Park that lies in the lower southern region of Satpuda hills is named after the Pench River. The national park lies on the border of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh in districts of Seoni and Chhindwara.

Pench National park is a combination of Indira Priyadarshani Pench National Park and Mowgli Pench Sanctuary. The total area of the park is where 299 sq kms is core area where as remaining is buffer. The area of the present tiger reserve has a glorious history. A description of its natural wealth and richness occurs in Ain-i-Akbari. Pench Tiger Reserve and its neighborhood is the original setting of Rudyard Kipling’s most famous work, The Jungle Book.

Pench was declared as a sanctuary in 1977 later given a status of National Park in 1983. In year 1992, it was declared as a Tiger Reserve. In 2011, the park was awarded as the ‘BEST MANAGEMENT AWARD’. The park is closed half day every Wednesday and during monsoons. The peak season to visit Pench National park is from 1stOctober to 15th June.

Standard Itinerary :
Day 1 –
Pick up from Nagpur at 10:00 am and transfer to Pench national park in private car. Reach Resort by 1:00 pm. Check in and rest. After Lunch Gear up and Leave for 1st Wildlife Safari. Evening Back to Resort. Dinner. Lights off and day ends.

Day 2 –

Early Morning Have Breakfast and Leave for 2nd Wildlife Safari. Alternatively you may carry your breakfast on safari only to save on safari time. Post safari back for Lunch. After Lunch Leave for 3rd Wildlife Safari. Evening Back to Resort.  Dinner. Lights off and day ends.

Day 3 –
Early Morning Leave For 4th Wildlife Safari. Check Out luggage. Enjoy the delicious Lunch and post Lunch Leave For Nagpur airport/ junction by Private Vehicle.

The forest cover in the park area includes teak mixed with other species like saja, bijiayasal, lendia, haldu, dhaora, salai, aonla, amaltas. The ground is covered with maze of grasses, plants, bushes and saplings. Bamboo is also found at places. Scattered white kulu trees, also referred to as ‘ghost tree’. Another important tree for both wildlife and tribal people of this region is Mahua.

The Royal Bengal Tiger is the main cat species in the reserve. According to recent census about 45 tigers live here. Other than tigers, leopards, jungle cats, rusty spotted cat are also seen. Other mammals include Sloth bear, Wild dogs, Jackals, Wolves, Spotted deers, Sambar, Barking deer, Blackbucks, Nilgaietc are seen.

The park is rich in bird life too. The park harbours more than 210 species including several migratory ones. Some of them are Peafowl, Junglefowl, Crow pheasant, Crimson-Breasted Barbet, Red-Vented Bulbul, Racket-Tailed Drongo, Indian roller, magpie robin, lesser whistling teal, Pintail, Shoveller, Egret and Herons, Minivet, Oriole, Wagtail, Munia, Myna, Waterfowl and Blue kingfisher and list goes on.


BMW Male :
This is a huge hulk of Pench. Called BMW because of the notable marking of letters B,M and W  on  its left tigh. First sighted in 2006 this male is about 11 years of age. Bmw’s ancestry is unknown but he has fathered cubs of many pench tigresses.

Raiyakassa Male :
Raiyakassa male or Sula male is very much in his prime called sula cause of the wine glass marking he adorns.He has his territory in raiyakassa area.This 10 year old hunk is very charming and is favorite  boy of Pench.

Collorwali Female :
The famous collared tigress of India, she is princess of Pench. Together with her sister and two brothers she grew up under the spotlight of the wildlife ‘Big Brother’ TV programme, as the four cubs of the ‘Spy in the Jungle’ series, which was to be such a huge hit around the world in 2008.This beautiful lady rules the surrounding area near Pench River. Most famous tigress of Pench, she is just 10 years old. And she has reputation of mothering highest number of cubs of about 22 in her life till date.

Baghinala Female :
Sister of the famous Collorwali tigress, this one is shy and reserved. She grew up in spotlight of her vivacious sister but eventually  opened up,got her own territory and has mothered multiple litters. Currently, she has 4 cubs all hale and hearty and lives happily in the Mowgli Land.


Pench national park in Madhya Pradesh shares its boundary with Maharshtra. The Maharashtra side of the park is also open for safaris and tourism.

From Madhya Pradesh side :

There 3 gates from which one can enter the park-

From Maharashtra Side:

For safari bookings one has to do it online via Madhya Pradesh / Maharashtra booking portal.  Morning and evening safaris are available for tourism.  The safari timing change as per seasons and sunrise and sunset.

  • Morning Jeep: 6.00 A.M to 11.00 A.M. (entry allowed until 8.00 a.m.)
  • Afternoon Jeep: 3.00 P.M. until 6.00 P.M (entry allowed until 4.30 p.m.)

Each gate offers safari permit to the exclusive area of that range and no vehicle is allowed to interchange the zones while on safari. The entry and exit gate for the vehicle has to be same. The gypsy charges or vehicle charges are separate and one has to pay differently.

The tourists are not allowed to get down from the vehicle throughout the safari. A set of rules and regulation exists for tiger safari and the park guide is aware of that. One has to follow his instruction in order to follow the regulations.

For the gate entry one needs to produce identification documents of the tourists like passport/driving license/ pan card etc. For the foreigners the passport in original has to be shown.


You will find ample options for accommodation right from bagpacking budget to Luxury stay. The hotels provide clean basic amenities, good veg-non veg meals, A/c  Rooms and so on. There are also Madhya Preadesh tourism department rest houses available for stay.
